Acupuncture

At Providence Physio, we integrate proven, traditional techniques with modern medical science. Acupuncture Therapy and Dry Needling are powerful tools we use alongside our physiotherapy treatments to help reduce your pain, release muscle tension, and stimulate your body’s natural healing system.

What is Acupuncture?

This term can refer to several techniques, all of which use fine, sterile, single-use needles. At Providence Physio, our certified therapists practise two main forms:

  • Western Medical Acupuncture: This is a modern, science-based approach. We insert fine needles at specific points on the body, which are chosen based on our deep understanding of anatomy and neurophysiology. This stimulates the nervous system to release your body’s own natural pain-relieving chemicals (like endorphins) and increases blood flow to the area to promote recovery.
  • Dry Needling: This technique is specifically used to treat muscular pain. We insert a fine needle directly into a myofascial “trigger point”—a tight, sensitive knot in your muscle. This elicits a “twitch” response, which causes the tight muscle band to relax, relieving tension, reducing pain, and restoring efficient muscle function.

How long does the treatment last?

Acupuncture/Dry Needling is used within your physiotherapy appointment; it is not a standalone treatment. Your therapist will integrate it into your regular treatment plan as needed. Most patients who benefit from it will receive it over 3 to 6 sessions as part of their comprehensive programme.

How many sessions will I need?

While some patients feel relief after one session, a full course is needed for lasting tissue repair. The evidence-based protocol is typically 3 to 5 treatment sessions, spaced approximately one week apart.

Does the treatment hurt?

This is the most common question we receive. The needles we use are extremely fine—much thinner than a standard injection needle.

What is acupuncture therapy?

Acupuncture therapy involves inserting fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body to help ease pain, improve movement, and support the body’s natural healing response.

Is acupuncture an alternative therapy?

Yes, acupuncture is often described as an alternative therapy, but in the UK, it is widely used within clinical and physiotherapy settings because of its evidence-based benefits.

Is acupuncture massage therapy?

No. Acupuncture is not massage therapy. It involves needle insertion, while massage uses manual pressure. Both can be combined for better relief depending on your condition.

What kind of therapy is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is considered a complementary therapy that supports medical and physiotherapy treatments by reducing pain, improving circulation, and encouraging muscle relaxation.

Is acupuncture a complementary therapy?

Yes. Acupuncture is recognised as a complementary therapy and is frequently used with physiotherapy, manual therapy, and rehabilitation exercises to enhance recovery.
